What is an Apostille in Ontario and Canada?
In Ontario, apostille and authentication services are provided through designated provincial and federal authorities, including Official Documents Services (ODS) and Global Affairs Canada, depending on the type of document and where it was issued. Once a document has been apostilled—or properly authenticated and legalized when required—it is generally accepted by foreign governments, courts, educational institutions, and other authorities for purposes such as immigration, citizenship applications, property transactions, legal proceedings, business matters, and academic admissions.

An apostille is an internationally recognized certificate attached to a public document to verify its authenticity for use in another country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Since Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention in January 2024, Canadian documents intended for use in member countries can now be apostilled, eliminating the need for the traditional multi-step authentication and legalization process in many cases.
