Vehicle Bill of Sale & Gift Transfers in Brampton
Start here — it may save you a trip
Most private vehicle sales in Ontario do not need a notary. When you sell a used vehicle privately, the bill of sale forms part of the Used Vehicle Information Package the seller is required to buy, and both parties simply sign it. No commissioner, no stamp, no fee to us.
Gifting a vehicle to a family member is different. The Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Motor Vehicle in the Province of Ontario — Form 1157 — has to be sworn in front of a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits. That is the form most people are looking for when they search for a notary for a car transfer.
We would rather tell you that up front than take $25 for something you did not need. If you are not sure which situation you are in, call and describe it — +1 (647) 684-8559.
If a receiving office — ServiceOntario, an insurer, a dealership, an out-of-province registry — has told you a document must be notarized or sworn, bring their instructions with you.
What we commission for vehicles
Form 1157 — Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Motor Vehicle
Vehicle family gift transfers, transfer forms and vehicle sale documents
Statutory declarations where the registered owner has died, moved or cannot sign
Affidavits where a bill of sale is lost or the paperwork is incomplete
Certified true copies of ownership documents, licences and insurance papers
RIN letters for businesses registering vehicles

$25 + HST per document. A family gift transfer is normally one document, so that is usually the whole cost. Ask about discounted rates for multiple documents.
We serve Brampton and surrounding communities, including Mississauga, Caledon, Vaughan, Oakville, Georgetown, Norval, Malton, Milton, Etobicoke, Newmarket and Markham.
Who counts as family
Ontario’s family gift exemption only applies between certain relatives, and the list is specific — spouse, parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, and some in-law and step relationships. It is worth confirming you qualify before you pay for a sworn statement, because if the relationship is not on the list the transfer is taxed as a normal sale.
We can commission the form. We cannot tell you whether you qualify for the tax exemption — that is a ServiceOntario and Ministry of Finance question.
What to bring
The completed form, unsigned. Form 1157 is available from ServiceOntario, and we can print it for you free if you do not have it.
Valid government-issued photo ID for the person swearing — current, not expired.
The vehicle permit (ownership) and, if you have it, the Used Vehicle Information Package.
Proof of the relationship if the receiving office has asked for it.
How it works
1. Call +1 (647) 684-8559 and describe the transfer — sale or gift, and who to. We will tell you whether you need us at all.
2. Book a time. In person in Brampton, or mobile if it is easier to meet at your home or workplace.
3. Swear and sign. Your ID is checked, the statement is sworn, your signature is witnessed and the stamp applied. Take it to ServiceOntario with the rest of your paperwork.

Frequently asked questions
Does a bill of sale need to be notarized in Ontario? Generally no for a private sale — the bill of sale forms part of the Used Vehicle Information Package and only needs both signatures. A family gift transfer is the exception: Form 1157 must be sworn before a commissioner.
How much does it cost to get Form 1157 sworn? $25 + HST. Call +1 (647) 684-8559 to arrange a time — same day is often possible.
Can both the giver and the receiver sign at the same appointment? Yes, and it is usually easiest. Both need to bring valid photo ID.
Can this be done online? Sometimes. ServiceOntario’s requirements govern, not ours, so call before booking a virtual appointment for a vehicle transfer.
Can you come to me? Yes — mobile appointments across the Brampton area. You can also see our full range of notary services.
